Secretary John Kerry's Case for Syrian Intervention

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry makes the strongest case thus far for American intervention into Syria's ongoing civil war based on the Assad regime's brutal use of chemical weapons last week in a Damascus neighborhood that killed over one thousand civilians.

I'd hate to be political in this situation, but if President Obama wanted to be a leader on Syria; he would have made this speech, and not his Secretary of State.

NATO Allies Further Difficult U.S. Syria Mission

President Obama's Syrian calculations just got even more complicated following the decisions of several NATO allies on a potential strike:

Britain

Prime Minister Cameron was Obama's strongest partner in calling for air strikes and targeted attacks to punish Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for his regime's highly suspected use of chemical weapons last week in a Damascus neighborhood. However, that all changed when parliament failed to approve action by just thirteen votes yesterday afternoon.

Germany

With crucial elections facing Chancellor Angela Merkel's weakened Christian Democrats in three weeks time and a very war weary public following the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the German government has no plans of joining such operation whatsoever and has not been asked to do so by potential allies.

France

French President Francois Hollande has been steadfast in his belief that Bashar al-Assad's regime must be punished for their actions and has publicly announced France's support for any U.S. led strike on Assad's forces and command centers.

Leaving the United States with only French support in any potential mission targeting Assad forces, and due to French timelines that (a.) U.N. inspectors must be off the ground and (b.) President Hollande must inform parliament three days before any military action, without any active allies until next Saturday at the least.

What say you?

Ouch: British Parliament Votes Against Syria Action

The British Parliament has denied Prime Minister David Cameron's request to allow strikes on Syria following the Ghouta massacre.

A government motion was defeated by 285 to 272, a majority of 13 votes.

Prime Minster David Cameron said it was clear Parliament does not want action and "the government will act accordingly".

Hasan Gets Death

Just dessert.

From the AP via Breitbart:
A military jury on Wednesday sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, handing the Army psychiatrist the ultimate punishment after a trial in which he seemed to be courting martyrdom by making almost no effort to defend himself.

The rare military death sentence came nearly four years after the attack that stunned even an Army hardened by more than a decade of constant war. Hasan walked into a medical building where soldiers were getting medical checkups, shouted "Allahu akbar" _ Arabic for "God is great!" _ and opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun. Thirteen people were killed.

Hasan, who said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, had no visible reaction when the sentence was announced, staring first at the jury forewoman and then at the judge. Some victims' relatives were in the courtroom but none showed any reaction, which the judge had warned against.

The American-born Muslim of Palestinian descent acted as his own attorney and never denied his actions at the huge Texas Army post. In opening statements, he told jurors that evidence would show he was the shooter and described himself as a soldier who had "switched sides."

The West Prepares to Strike Syria

The United Kingdom has announced that it will put forward a resolution to the U.N. Security Council condemning Bashar al-Assad's regime for use of deadly chemical weapons over the past week, while seeking authorization of "necessary measures to protect civilians."

This comes in the aftermath of a suspected chemical weapons attack by Assad's regime on rebel held neighborhoods in Damascus that killed anywhere from 500 to 1,500 civilians and has caused international outrage, spurring the United States to deploy additional assets to the Mediterranean Sea and the French President to demand punishment for those responsible.

BBC Graphic of available US/UK assets
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has indicated that the United States is prepared to launch cruise missile strikes when so ordered by President Obama and other reports have the Pentagon readying three days worth of strikes to assault command centers and positions of power within the Assad regime to reduce the chance of chemical weapon usage.

All of these different aspects could come together at anytime and lead to the largest coordinated Western strike on a disruptive Arab regime since the Libyan conflict two years ago, or even the First Desert Storm over twenty years ago.

Titus Young Warrant Issued

Missed his court date.

However, Young's attorney Altus Hudson said he doesn't expect his client to be arrested, saying the court knows his location. He declined to elaborate outside court.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Andre Manssourian issued the $100,000 bench warrant after meeting with Hudson and the district attorney's office in chambers. The judge also revoked Young's bail and accepted a document from the defense under seal.

Young, 24, has failed to appear at several court hearings, including one on Aug. 6, when the judge ordered him to be in court Tuesday.

What the....?

John Kerry: Syria Has Used Chemical Weapons; 'Actions' to Come

What are these 'actions' they promise? Your guess is as good as mine.

From the New York Times:
Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that the use of chemical weapons in attacks on civilians in Syria last week was undeniable and that the Obama administration would hold the Syrian government accountable for what he called a “moral obscenity” that had shocked the world’s conscience.

In some of the most strident language used yet by the administration, Mr. Kerry accused the Syrian government of cynically seeking to cover up the use of the weapons and he rejected its denial of responsibility for what he called a “cowardly crime.”

Mr. Kerry’s remarks, in a prepared statement he read at the State Department, reinforced the administration’s toughening stance on the Syria conflict, which is now well into its third year, and he suggested the White House was moving closer to a military response in consultation with America’s allies.

“The indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, the killing of women and children and innocent bystanders by chemical weapons is a moral obscenity,” Mr. Kerry said.

“By any standard, it is inexcusable,” he said. “And despite the excuses and equivocations that some have manufactured, it is undeniable.”

The Best in Comfort for Men

When I'm relaxing at home or out on the job I want to make sure that I'm as comfortable as possible. There are many ways to do this, but sometimes the most important part of comfort and confidence is what is actually on the person. Take clothing, for example. Most people want to look professional yet approachable.

But that doesn't just fit for the outside. Being comfortable in your underwear is still very important-- especially for men. That's why I tried out some rounderwear-- a comfortable and stylish way for me to make sure that I'm taken care of by all of my clothes-- not just the ones that you see. With such a wardrobe, I feel more confident and ready to take on the day. I would highly recommend rounderwear to any man that likes to look good while sitting, running, or working in comfort.

Nidal Hasan Found Guilty

From the AP:
Maj. Nidal Hasan was convicted Friday for the deadly 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, a shocking assault against American troops at home by one of their own who said he opened fire on fellow soldiers to protect Muslim insurgents abroad.

A jury of high-ranking military officers reached a unanimous guilty verdict on all 13 counts of premeditated murder and a guilty verdict on 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. Hasan is now eligible for the death penalty.

Hasan stared at the jury with no visible reaction as the verdict was read. After he and jurors left the courtroom, some victims who survived the attack and victims' relatives began to cry.

The Army psychiatrist acknowledged carrying out the attack at the Texas military base inside a crowded waiting room, where unarmed troops were making final preparations to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. Thirteen people were killed and more than 30 were wounded.

Because Hasan never denied his actions, the case was always less about a conviction than it was about ensuring a death sentence.

Two Blasts Kill Sunnis in Lebanon

Two blasts have killed dozens in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. The blasts, that seem to target Sunnis, come after the latest problems in Syria. It appears that Assad may have have pressured Hezbollah to distract attention by sparking sectarian conflict in his former client state.

The first explosion hit the Taqwa mosque, frequented by hardline Sunni Islamists, and killed at least 14 people there, according to accounts earlier in the day.

Further deaths were reported from a second blast outside the al-Salam mosque, which the Interior Ministry said was hit by a car laden with 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of explosives.

Text of Ryan Braun's Statement

More info here.

"Now that the initial MLB investigation is over, I want to apologize for my actions and provide a more specific account of what I did and why I deserved to be suspended. I have no one to blame but myself. I know that over the last year and a half I made some serious mistakes, both in the information I failed to share during my arbitration hearing and the comments I made to the press afterwards.

"I have disappointed the people closest to me -- the ones who fought for me because they truly believed me all along. I kept the truth from everyone. For a long time, I was in denial and convinced myself that I had not done anything wrong.

"It is important that people understand that I did not share details of what happened with anyone until recently. My family, my teammates, the Brewers organization, my friends, agents and advisors had no knowledge of these facts, and no one should be blamed but me. Those who put their necks out for me have been embarrassed by my behavior. I don't have the words to express how sorry I am for that.

"Here is what happened. During the latter part of the 2011 season, I was dealing with a nagging injury and I turned to products for a short period of time that I shouldn't have used. The products were a cream and a lozenge which I was told could help expedite my rehabilitation. It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately.

"I deeply regret many of the things I said at the press conference after the arbitrator's decision in February 2012. At that time, I still didn't want to believe that I had used a banned substance. I think a combination of feeling self-righteous and having a lot of unjustified anger led me to react the way I did. I felt wronged and attacked, but looking back now, I was the one who was wrong. I am beyond embarrassed that I said what I thought I needed to say to defend my clouded vision of reality. I am just starting the process of trying to understand why I responded the way I did, which I continue to regret. There is no excuse for any of this.

"For too long during this process, I convinced myself that I had not done anything wrong. After my interview with MLB in late June of this year, I came to the realization that it was time to come to grips with the truth. I was never presented with baseball's evidence against me, but I didn't need to be, because I knew what I had done. I realized the magnitude of my poor decisions and finally focused on dealing with the realities of -- and the punishment for -- my actions.

"I requested a second meeting with Baseball to acknowledge my violation of the drug policy and to engage in discussions about appropriate punishment for my actions. By coming forward when I did and waiving my right to appeal any sanctions that were going to be imposed, I knew I was making the correct decision and taking the first step in the right direction. It was important to me to begin my suspension immediately to minimize the burden on everyone I had so negatively affected -- my teammates, the entire Brewers organization, the fans and all of MLB. There has been plenty of rumor and speculation about my situation, and I am aware that my admission may result in additional attacks and accusations from others.

"I love the great game of baseball, and I am very sorry for any damage done to the game. I have privately expressed my apologies to Commissioner [Bud] Selig and Rob Manfred of MLB and to Michael Weiner and his staff at the Players Association. I'm very grateful for the support I've received from them. I sincerely apologize to everybody involved in the arbitration process, including the collector, Dino Laurenzi Jr. I feel terrible that I put my teammates in a position where they were asked some very difficult and uncomfortable questions. One of my primary goals is to make amends with them.

"I understand it's a blessing and a tremendous honor to play this game at the Major League level. I also understand the intensity of the disappointment from teammates, fans and other players. When it comes to both my actions and my words, I made some very serious mistakes, and I can only ask for the forgiveness of everyone I let down. I will never make the same errors again, and I intend to share the lessons I learned with others so they don't repeat my mistakes. Moving forward, I want to be part of the solution and no longer part of the problem.

"I support baseball's Joint Drug Treatment and Prevention Program and the importance of cleaning up the game. What I did goes against everything I have always valued- achieving through hard work and dedication, and being honest both on and off the field. I also understand that I will now have to work very, very hard to begin to earn back people's trust and support. I am dedicated to making amends and to earning back the trust of my teammates, the fans, the entire Brewers' organization, my sponsors, advisors and from MLB. I am hopeful that I can earn back the trust from those who I have disappointed and those who are willing to give me the opportunity. I am deeply sorry for my actions, and I apologize to everyone who has been adversely affected by them."

Braun: I Doped

Dick.

The USA Today quoting a statement by Braun:
Now that the initial MLB investigation is over, I want to apologize for my actions and provide a more specific account of what I did and why I deserved to be suspended. I have no one to blame but myself. I know that over the last year and a half I made some serious mistakes, both in the information I failed to share during my arbitration hearing and the comments I made to the press afterwards.

Red Line: Assad Targets Civilians in Nerve Gas Attacks, Over 500 Killed

Latest numbers have the total killed at over 600. This has definite shades of Halabja and it appears that this will get much, much worse. This is the one attack that seems to be confirmed and could be huge news.

According to Reuters news agency, the reported use of the chemical agents could not be immediately verified. The news coincides with a visit to Damascus by a United Nations team of chemical weapons experts.

Activists from the grassroots Local Coordination Committee reported at least 30 bodies had been brought to one field hospital in Kafr Batna neighborhood a few miles east of central Damascus, according to Reuters.

Explosion Rocks Middletown NJ Navy Boathouse 8/20/2013

Apparent accidental explosion has wounded eight in New Jersey.

One person is hospitalized with serious injuries, while seven workers sustained minor injuries, primarily smoke inhalation, the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Public Affairs Office said. All eight were taken to area hospitals.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation. The workers were performing routine maintenance on a utility boat when the explosion occurred. The Navy said damage from the explosion was contained to within the boathouse area, and ammunition and ordnance operations at the weapons station were not affected.

Northern Colorado to Vote on Secession

Bring some of that to New York. The Yuppies are destroying Colorado. The vote is scheduled for this November, but it's still not a sure thing.

Forming a state isn’t easy: Even if the ballot measures pass, the Colorado state legislature would be required to amend the constitution to configure the state’s borders and refer a request for a new state to Congress.

Approving a 51st state would require a majority vote of both houses of Congress, although the Constitution doesn’t require the signature of the president, Mr. Hare said.

“Again, folks say this can never happen. However, we are starting to hear from disenfranchised groups all over the country,” said a post on the 51st State Initiative’s website. “We are truly a divided nation. It is possible, if not likely, that we may not be the only group requesting from Congress the formation of a new state.”

Al-Jihadeya Al-Salafeya Leader Al-Zawahiri Captured

Suck it.

From the Egypt Daily News:
Mohamed Al-Zawahiri, the brother of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri, and high-ranking leader of militant group Al-Jihadeya Al-Salafeya (The Salafi Jihad) was arrested in Giza on Saturday, reported state-owned Al-Ahram.

Al-Zawahiri was caught while attempting to pass through a police checkpoint when security officials identified him.

Al-Zawahiri has been arrested a number of times for his connection to jihadi activities.

He recently made appearances on Islamist channels, and wrote statements on his Facebook page (now closed), in which he claimed that Al-Jihadeya Al-Salafeya “is monitoring the situation [in Egypt] closely.”

Egypt Considers Outlawing Muslim Brotherhood

President Obama will be so disappointed.

From My Way News:
Egyptian authorities are considering disbanding the Muslim Brotherhood group, a government spokesman said Saturday, once again outlawing a group that held the pinnacle of government power just more than a month earlier.

The announcement comes after security forces broke up two sit-in protests this week by those calling for the reinstatement of President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood leader deposed in a July 3 coup. The clashes killed more than 600 people that day and sparked protests and violence that killed 173 people Friday alone.

Cabinet spokesman Sherif Shawki said that Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi, who leads the military-backed government, assigned the Ministry of Social Solidarity to study the legal possibilities of dissolving the group. He didn't elaborate.

The Muslim Brotherhood group, founded in 1928, came to power a year ago when its Morsi was elected in the country's first free presidential elections. The election came after the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising in 2011.

Video: The Dumbest Political Ad in History?

Whitey Bulger Found Guilty

From the AP via Yahoo:
James "Whitey" Bulger, the feared Boston mob boss who became one of the nation's most-wanted fugitives, was convicted Monday in a string of 11 killings and other gangland crimes, many of them committed while he was said to be an FBI informant.

Bulger, 83, showed no reaction upon hearing the verdict, which brought to a close a case that not only transfixed the city with its grisly violence but exposed corruption inside the Boston FBI and an overly cozy relationship between the bureau and its underworld snitches.

Bulger was charged primarily with racketeering, a catchall offense that listed 33 criminal acts — among them, 19 murders that he allegedly helped orchestrate or carried out himself during the 1970s and '80s while he led the Winter Hill Gang, Boston's ruthless Irish mob. The racketeering charge also included acts of extortion, conspiracy, money-laundering and drug dealing.

After 4½ days of deliberations, the jury decided he took part in 11 of those murders, along with nearly all the other crimes, as well as a laundry list of other counts including possession of machine guns.

Syrian Government Hits Rebels in Ambush

The Syrian government and at least one outside watch group claims a Syrian army ambush of rebel forces, killing dozens. The Syrian government places the rebels as members of an al Qaeda affiliated group. The attack reportedly killed 62 rebels and no government forces.

SANA said the rebels were members of the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra or Nusra Front. It added that they included foreign fighters.

Syrian troops have been on the offensive in the past few months in an attempt to clear out Damascus suburbs used by opposition fighters to threaten President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

State-run broadcaster Al-Ikhbariya TV aired footage of bloodied dead men, some in military uniforms. It said they were killed in an ambush as they were on their way to attack an army post near Damascus.

Yemen Claims Qaeda Plot Blocked

Yemen's government has claimed that is has halted an al Qaeda plan right as the country is in international spotlight. Coming off of yesterday's drone strike that killed at least four al Qaeda, Yemen has stopped a plot to seize a sea terminal and capture or kill its foreign workers.
The plan would have involved many Qaeda operatives wearing Yemeni Army uniforms to seize the port and then attack, kill or kidnap foreigners working there, the officials said. It was not clear if the disruption of the purported plan was linked to a spate of recent American drone strikes.
Yemen has played this up to be quite a bit larger:
The BBC earlier quoted a Yemeni government spokesman as saying the foiled plots were more extensive, involving plans to blow up oil pipelines and take over two ports in the south, threatening Yemen’s oil exports.

Spitzer's Libertarian opponent for Comptroller, fmr. Madame Kristin Davis busted by Eric Holder's FBI for selling prescription drugs

The Clintons cleaning up lose ends as she prepares her 2016 presidential bid?

From Eric Dondero:

This just breaking minutes ago... Kristin Davis, a friend of this website, 2010 Independent-Libertarian candidate for New York Governor and 2013 candidate for New York City Comptroller against Democrat Eliot Spitzer, has been arrested in a string operation by the FBI.
NYPost

Ms. Davis was alleged to have sold a substantial quantity of prescription drugs to an undercover agent.

MSN
However, it is also known that Davis had a number of interviews scheduled with New York-area media regarding her campaign.

Sources indicate that she may have been willing to divulge information in those upcoming interviews on Spitzer and other top elected Democrat officials who may have been clients of her escorting service in 2008/09.

Note - Spitzer had to resign his governorship after admitting to soliciting prostitutes from Davis's firm, including well-known call girl Ashley Duprey.

Note also - In a 2009 interview with NYC radio morning shock jocks Opie and Anthony, Kristin Davis hinted strongly as to the identity of the other Governor client from a "northeast state." The individual now happens to be a top advisor for Hillary Clinton's expected presidential campaign.

Ross Township PA Shooter Information 8/6/2013

Some information is coming out about the Ross Township Pennsylvania shooter, Rockne Newell.

From his Facebook.

More here.

From a failed charity bid, perhaps why he instigated the shooting.

More here.

From an article he linked:

Newell, who's on a property/school tax payment plan with the mortgage paid up, said he lives on Social Security disability payments from a crash injury. He said the township has been harassing him with claims that he has never obtained the proper permits and that he has sewage and "junk" clustered about the property.
Township officials referred all Pocono Record inquiries to their attorney, John Dunn, for this article, but a 2002 article quotes then-township supervisor Butch Kresge as saying Newell shouldn't be allowed to have "junk" on his property since no one else does.
"That's funny because, when I moved here, this property was one of only three on the entire road that didn't have what they call 'junk,'" Newell said, though his property now has the largest amount of visibly cluttered items on Flyte Road.
"I'm a collector from a family of collectors," he said. "I use most of what I collect, like part of a playground slide to pour concrete for cinder blocks and wood to fence my yard from people driving by and throwing beer bottles. This saves me hundreds of dollars. I scrap and sell what I can't use."

US Drone Strike Kills 4 al Qaeda in Yemen

At least four al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula members have been killed in a US drone strike. This comes after the heightened security following communication between Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and the branch in Yemen.

A US drone strike killed four suspected Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen's eastern Marib province early Tuesday, a tribal source told AFP, amid heightened security against a possible attack by the jihadist network.

The raid targeted their vehicle "and turned it into a ball of fire, immediately killing the four militants, all of whom are Yemeni," the source said. About two dozen US diplomatic posts have been shuttered across the Middle East since Sunday after Washington said electronic intercepts of high-ranking Al-Qaeda operatives signalled a major attack was imminent.

A-Rod Suspended Until 2015

From CBS:
Alex Rodriguez has been banned for 211 regular-season games by Major League Baseball for his part in the sport’s latest performance-enhancing drugs scandal.

The New York Yankees star is expected to appeal the suspension, which takes effect Thursday. He’ll be allowed to play during the grievance process and penciled in to make his season debut Monday night in Chicago.

Rodriguez’s suspension will run through 2014.

The third baseman was linked during the offseason to Biogenesis, the Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing PEDs. A-Rod denied all ties to the clinic and its operator, Anthony Bosch, after the Miami New Times published its bombshell report in January.

Bosch agreed to cooperate with MLB’s probe in June.

Rebels Launch Offensive in Latakia Against Alawites

In a stunning move, rebel forces opposed to dictator Bashar al-Assad have launched an offensive in the Alawite city of Latakia, along the Mediterranean coast. The city has been relatively untouched by the war and is meant as a major slap in the face to the Alawite dictator.

The rebels "have a habit of escalating without preparing as soon as they feel they have enough weapons. But they are not ready... and the regime's response will be crazy."

Nassar said the rebels have taken prisoner an Alawite cleric, Badr Ghazal, from the village of Baruda after he issued a religious decree urging rebel forces "stamped out completely."

Yemeni Intelligence Officer's Killing al Qaeda's Shot Across the Bow

Al Qaeda has much of the world on high alert, with the United States closing down multiple embassies across the planet in fear of an attack. The first one seems to be from the Qaeda hotspot Yemen, where American officials had feared an attack. This comes during unrest in the country. The death of the intelligence official seems to be the first part of the possible attacks.

Officials say Lt. Col. Mohammed el-Mamari was shot on his way home Sunday. He was walking to his car after work when two unidentified gunmen killed him in the central province of Bayda. The officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.
