Mayan End of the World Predictions

The Mayan civilization had one of the most advanced calendars outside of Europe or Asia. When crafting their calendar, they ended it on December 21, 2012. What's going to happen that day? Surely, most people aren't afraid, but what are some of the theories out there? National Geographic says nothing:

Houston and Stuart's initial interpretation indicated that a god will descend at the end of Bak'tun 13. What would happen next is uncertain, although the scholars suggested this might have been a prophecy of some sort. This 1996 analysis was picked up "on many New Age websites, associated forum discussions, and even a few book chapters" as evidence that the Maya calendar had predicted the end of the world, according to Stuart.Houston and Stuart, however, independently revisited the glyphs recently and concluded that the inscription may actually contain no prophetic statements about 2012 at all.Rather, the mention of the end of Bak'tun 13 is likely a forward-looking statement that refers back to the main subject of the inscription, which is the dedication of Monument 6.

NBC News Correspondent, Richard Engel, Missing in Syria

Bad news. From the Inquisitr:
Richard Engel has reportedly gone missing in Syria, with the NBC News foreign correspondent out of touch since last Thursday.

Reports of Engel’s disappearance have come from Turkish news sources, which also note that a Turkish journalist working with Engel, Aziz Akyava┼č, has also gone missing. Engel had been reporting on the ongoing conflict between rebels and forces backing President Bashar al-Assad.

News of Richard Engel’s disappearance in Syria have reportedly been blacked out of NBC News. Gawker noted that it had agreed to the blackout for the past 24 hours, but broke the news on Monday afternoon.

Engel’s disappearance has been widely reported in Turkish media, with the newspaper Hurriyet reporting that Engel and Akyavas were last in contact with NBC News on Thursday morning.

Haley Selects Tim Scott to Replace Retiring DeMint in Senate

Excellent news from beautiful South Carolina this afternoon: Governor Nikki Haley has reportedly selected Republican Congressman Tim Scott to replace Jim DeMint in the U.S. Senate, elevating the young and inspiring two-term Scott to a position of prominence in a rather short time.

Scott, who will be the only African-American in the United States Senate the 113th Congress, is an inspiring case as he lifted himself from lowly poverty as a child to become a successful businessman and now U.S. Senator from, historically speaking, the heart of the old, and oppressive Confederacy.

And even more ironic.... He defeated former U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond's son in the primary back in 2010, but now he's serving in the seat the old segregationist once served in for decades and decades. I wonder what the South Carolinian's of the 1800s would say to an Indian-American woman as Governor appointing an African-American man to become Senator...

My have we come a long way as a nation birthed in equality.

What say you?

Leading Texas Democrat official says "shoot" NRA members and Republicans who support gun rights

His Houston-area Congressman, Lifetime NRA member Ron Paul a target?

by Eric Dondero

John Cobarruvias is a long-serving Precinct Chair for the Democrat Party in Houston. He attended the 2008 NetRoots conference held in Austin. He's helped to organize protests against Texas Republicans. He was also a volunteer campaign worker for former State Senator Rick Noriega who ran for US Senate.

Cobarruvias has a blog, called, "Bay Area Houston." According to the headline, "Hard hitting political commentary, consumer activism, and always full of wit." Of particular interest to libertarian Republicans, Cobarruvias appears to be a bit of a Ron Paul hater too. One of his recent articles has a photo of a pick-up truck decked out with Ron Paul bumper stickers, headline: "Laughing and puking on GOP Tea Baggers."

Earlier this morning, it was discovered by libertarian Republican columnist for The Examiner and friend of this website Joe Newby, that Cobarruvias may have just stepped over the line from "hard hitting political commentary," to advocacy of assault and yes, even murder.
liberals on Twitter called for the murder of NRA members. One of those making the calls was identified Sunday as John Cobarruvias, a blogger, Democratic precinct chairman in the Houston area and a member of the Texas Democratic Executive Committee.

"Can we now shoot the #NRA and everyone who defends them?" he tweeted.

After reading about the tweets on another site, Yvonne Larsen noticed a familiar name.

"Among the selection of tweets advocating for the murder of NRA President Keene and all NRA members was a name familiar to me; probably familiar to many readers of Houston’s Liberal blog sites," she wrote at Big Jolly Politics.

Larsen said she "pasted a screen shot from the Freedom’s Outpost story in case NASA employee and Democrat Precinct 699 Chair John Cobarruvias of the Houstonblog Bay Area Houston tries to delete his tweet."
It should be noted, that Cobarruvias lives in Bay Area, Houston, which is partly represented by Congressman Ron Paul. The Lake Jackson-based Congressman is a long-standing NRA member going back to the 1970s. Was Cobarruvias's threat aimed at his local congressman?

Because I'm in a cranky mood today

If you haven’t picked up on it by now, I despise people who have one set of standards for one group of people, and an entirely different set of standards for everyone else.

Well, that’s not exactly precise. Going with that definition, I would hate everybody, even myself. I don’t mind it whenever there are two standards, so long as people are upfront about having two different sets of standards.

For instance, I’m not about to tell you that I am -in a phrase that will drive any liberals reading nuts- fair and balanced. I’m conservative, and approach things from a conservative viewpoint. There may be times when I can see the liberal or moderate or __________ viewpoint, and I will try to enunciate that viewpoint as well as I can. If I am reporting on an event, I will try to do so i a neutral manner, but I am sure that my conservative viewpoint will leak through. You will, however, know what my standards are and where I stand on any particular issue.

So let me try that again.

I despise people who do the above while presenting themselves as not having said different sets of standards.

With that being said, I now present to you a letter to the editor that appeared a couple of months ago in my local newspaper. It is from one Linda Farrell of Bella Vista, and she writes:

Driven to life of crime

I may commit a really serious crime very soon.

I’d like to kidnap the next person I hear say he is voting Republican in the next election. My victim would be physically unrestrained and well treated in a classy hotel with all the amenities and no limits on food, drink or macadamia nuts. He would communicate his well-being daily to his family via email. But he would be held under a few nonnegotiable restrictions.

He would not be allowed access to the so-called news program that fronts for the right wing and passes itself off as journalism.

He’d hear all of President Barack Obama’s campaign speeches, in full, without editing.

He’d be forced, under pain of my annoyance, to read the following: a 21st Century science book, a non-revisionist history book, a seventh-grade civics book, Bill McKibben’s Eaarth, Jerry Coyne’s Why Evolution is True, a nonpartisan economics book and every word of the U.S. Constitution. For company, he’d get visits from a single mom, a pregnant teen rape victim,a homeless veteran, a gay person, a guy whose job was shipped overseas by Bain, a welfare recipient, and representatives of every racial, ethnic, social and political group he hates for no logical reason.

He’d be released on Nov. 6th, sporting a tattoo of the president’s birth certificate on his posterior. Hopefully he’d be better-informed, more compassionate and more aware of his responsibility to seek the truth and vote in the best interests of all of us. One can only hope.

Now, I was going to let this go. I wasn’t going to rip into this little sanctimonious screed. I was just going to let it roll off my back and not get excited about it. I wasn’t going to write a letter to the editor ripping into this. I definitely wasn’t going to write about it here.

(I’m trying to not be so argumentative. I’ve noticed lately that whenever a liberal writes something stupid, I have to jump on my intellectual horse and ride that stupidity underneath my hooves. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.

A lot.)

So this letter appeared, and, with some deep breathing exercises, I was able to let it pass on by.

And then, early last week, Linda wrote another letter to the editor. Here is what she wrote:

Commandments For GOP

Monday, December 10, 2012

I shall accept the fact that President Barack Obama has been reelected and the people have spoken.

I shall never again ignore the needs and concerns of minorities, the poor, the middle class, women and any other constituencies .

I shall remember that a salary, benefits, perks and the prestige of high oftce are not automatically my rights but must be continuously earned as I execute my duties with honor, humility, maturity and respect for all with whom I labor - superiors, colleagues and subordinates alike.

I shall not pledge my allegiance to any individual, corporation, theology, media power or special interest group lest such pledges cloud my better judgment and displace my loyalties to the people I serve.

I shall put the people, always, over my party aftliation and political ambitions.

I shall try earnestly to better educate myself on economics, civics, history, world geography, and science so that I may properly serve the electorate.

I shall never forget that voting is the right and privilege of every American and will do nothing to interfere with that right.

I shall concentrate on the proper business of government - education, the economy, defense.

Foreign policy and climate change - and leave personal, private issues to each citizen as a right of conscience.

I shall show courage in all my deliberations, regardless of personal or political consequences and remind myself daily that power is derived from the “consent of the governed” and is as fleeting as their will.

Now, I’m a patient guy. I usually don’t let such stupidity get to me.

But whenever I read such sanctimonious claptrap with an accompanying helping of smugness, I can’t resist the urge to put my stomping boots on and start stomping some heads into the ground. And I don’t think its fair to hold back our passions, right?

So let’s jump right into fisking this little idiot, shall we?

Let’s take the earlier letter first.

Driven to life of crime

I may commit a really serious crime very soon.

If I had my way, stupidity would be a crime. And there would be nobody to protest it, because nearly all of the liberals would be in prison. Vote for me!

I’d like to kidnap the next person I hear say he is voting Republican in the next election.

Because people need your help, right Linda? There’s that open-mindedness and tolerance for others that liberals are known for.

My victim would be physically unrestrained and well treated in a classy hotel with all the amenities and no limits on food, drink or macadamia nuts. He would communicate his well-being daily to his family via email.

I’m going to resist the urge to point out that this fulfills one of Rush Limbaugh’s 35 Undeniable Truths of Life: Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society. Because you know that Ms. (pronounced Miz, as in miz-erable old cow) Farrell is a feminist.

Oops! Guess I didn’t resist that urge all that well, did I?

But he would be held under a few non-negotiable restrictions.

He would not be allowed access to the so-called news program that fronts for the right wing and passes itself off as journalism.

News programs that fronts for the left wing and passes itself off as journalism is just fine and dandy, however.

He’d hear all of President Barack Obama’s campaign speeches, in full, without editing.

I think that qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.

He’d be forced, under pain of my annoyance, to read the following: a 21st Century science book, a non-revisionist history book,

Non-revisionist from whose perspective, Linda?

a seventh-grade civics book,

I’m guessing so that she find out what happens next year in school.

Bill McKibben’s Eaarth,

Noope.

Jerry Coyne’s Why Evolution is True,

Only if I get to counter with a book of Apologetics of my choice.

a nonpartisan economics book

Got bad news for you, Linda: economics has a conservative bias.

and every word of the U.S. Constitution.

Gladly. I enjoy reading the Constitution. And while we’re at it, maybe Linda will be able to point out for me where in the Constitution there is justification for some of her favorite social programs. A teaching moment might occur.

For company, he’d get visits from a single mom, a pregnant teen rape victim,a homeless veteran, a gay person, a guy whose job was shipped overseas by Bain, a welfare recipient, and representatives of every racial, ethnic, social and political group he hates for no logical reason.

So, nobody would be visiting, then.

He’d be released on Nov. 6th, sporting a tattoo of the president’s birth certificate on his posterior.

Which birth certificate, Linda? There’s no fewer than three. I’m guessing Linda means the one signed by that great guitarist, U. K. L. Lee.

And notice the sexual suggestiveness inherent in Linda’s wish? Unless you know of some other way to put a tattoo on a man’s bare buttocks without him getting naked? There’s that Undeniable Truth of Life popping up again.

Hopefully he’d be better-informed, more compassionate and more aware of his responsibility to seek the truth and vote in the best interests of all of us. One can only hope.

Nope, not condescending at all. Won’t Linda be a bit disheartened when she finds out that the average conservative is better-informed, more compassionate, and more aware than she is? That must be one of those inconvenient truths I keep hearing about.

Well, let’s stagger on to the next milepost of stupidity.

Commandments For GOP

Monday, December 10, 2012

I shall accept the fact that President Barack Obama has been reelected and the people have spoken.

Hey Linda? You’re gonna find this hard to believe, but it was kind of easy to get over a poor choice. The American people have made bad decisions before (see Carter, Jimmuh, and Clinton, Bill), they’ll make them again in the future.

I shall never again ignore the needs and concerns of minorities, the poor, the middle class, women and any other constituencies .

Hmm, how interesting. What a throwaway line, eh?

I shall remember that a salary, benefits, perks and the prestige of high office are not automatically my rights but must be continuously earned as I execute my duties with honor, humility, maturity and respect for all with whom I labor - superiors, colleagues and subordinates alike.

Let’s have a moment of awkward silence, shall we?

Well,

okay,

maybe

more

than

one

moment,

eh?

So far as I know, there is no overlap in any of those links. In other words, there shouldn’t be any duplication among the Democrats’ / liberals’ hypocrisy. If there is, let me know. I’m sure I can find more examples. Lord knows, these were on the first page of the Google search “liberal hypocrisy" from a search that comes up with over 10 million results. There’s not exactly a dearth of examples of liberal hypocrisy.

I shall not pledge my allegiance to any individual, corporation, theology, media power or special interest group lest such pledges cloud my better judgment and displace my loyalties to the people I serve.

But Linda? You just finished telling us not to ignore the voices of the minorities, the poor, the downtrodden? Or do they not qualify as a "special interest group"?

Hey, does this mean that the Democrats will cut their ties with the NAA(L)CP? The NOW gang and other womynists? Planned Parenthood? The UAW, SEIU, and other agitators?

Yeah, I’m sure that’s going to happen.

I shall put the people, always, over my party aftliation [sic] and political ambitions.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s on the next Democratic Party meeting’s agenda, as well.

I shall try earnestly to better educate myself on economics,

Right! Like how spending $1 in unemployment insurance returns $2!

civics,

Right! Like how liberals in 2000 thought that the popular vote was good enough to win the Presidency. Hey, to be fair, its been several months since I’ve heard a liberal complain that Bush was selected, not elected. Boy, that never gets old, eh? Twelve years, and still we hear the sniveling of little liberal minds, chewing their defeats like old vomit.

history,

Right! Like how liberals are unaware that, under four Presidents (Hoover, Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush), taxes were cut and record levels of revenue resulted!

world geography,

Right! Like the Democratic congress critter that thought that the island of Guam would tip over if we built up our military presence there! Don’t talk to me about not anticipating that! We must think outside the box!

and science

Well.... there were "100 physicists against Einstein"

so that I may properly serve the electorate.

I shall never forget that voting is the right and privilege of every American

NO! Stop right there! Voting is not a right AND a privilege. It is one, or the other. It is not both.

If it is a right, then why does the Democratic Party work so hard every election to deny the votes of our military? If it is a right, then everyone MUST vote. No ifs, ands, or buts. Try enforcing that.

And every vote MUST be counted.

Most especially, our citizens in the military.

and will do nothing to interfere with that right.

So will the Democratic Party stop trying to make difficult the votes of our military? Yeah, I’m sure that’s next on the agenda, as well.

I shall concentrate on the proper business of government - education, the economy, defense, foreign policy, and climate change - and leave personal, private issues to each citizen as a right of conscience.

Oh please. On the plus side, she did get three out of five right as to the proper business of the federal government.

Unfortunately, those three are the only three that are the business of the federal government.

I shall show courage in all my deliberations, regardless of personal or political consequences and remind myself daily that power is derived from the “consent of the governed” and is as fleeting as their will.

Right! The people are only one instigation away from “torches and pitchforks”!

Man, I hate stupid people.

And just for this part of the year, Bah Humbug!

Japan Election Results

From CNN:
Japan's prime minister conceded defeat in parliamentary elections Sunday, signaling the return to power of the Liberal Democratic Party and ending the brief rule of the disappointing upstart Democratic Party of Japan.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda pledged to step down as party president after exit polls showed a smashing loss in lower house voting. The party, once seen as a breath of fresh air in Japanese politics, came to be regarded as increasingly ineffective.

"We got a regrettable result," Noda said. "The result is everything in the politics. The biggest responsibility lies on me. I will quit as the partly leader of DPJ."

The move clears the way for the return to power of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the current leader of the conservative-leaning Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP.

Obama's Future Plans For Energy Efficiency

The federal government continues to pursue energy efficiency in an effort to limit emissions linked to climate change. President Obama’s strategies for the future include providing customers with choices for energy saving cost reduction as well as the introduction of innovative green technology.

Apart from Department of Energy’s programs such as EERE biomass, many other programs may see a rise in activity in the future. The Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Guarantee Program has seen an increase in funds for feasible vehicle technologies.  Annual demand reduction targets have been called for to reduce the demand from Department of Energy’s projected levels by 15% till 2020. For making new buildings carbon neutral by the next decade, a goal has been set to improve the efficiency of buildings by 50%.

There are also plans to get 1 million plugin electric vehicles driven by 2015. The administration will keep using agencies for increasing the use of renewable energy on bases and in federal buildings.

The President’s signing of the executive order will help to address the barriers that have been preventing energy efficient technologies from working to their full potential in the United States. These barriers include high up-front costs and rate structures that have no support for end-use efficiency. The plan also calls for coordination of regional stakeholders that would further facilitate energy investment. Clean Energy Application Centers to provide information in the application of CHP has been set up in 8 regions by the U.S Department of Energy.

The President is expected to build on the success of what he has achieved so far. His administration has been putting funds in technologies that are progressing in energy-efficiency from energy-efficient cars to zero energy homes since 2009. The stimulus plan has led to $90 billion in grants, tax incentives and loans. The amount has funded almost 600,000 homes and energy programs.

Southwest Energy Efficiency project conducted a new study, findings of which were for every dollar spent on improving energy efficiency, residential consumers would have $2 in savings. Obama’s future plan focuses on energy security as opposed to energy independence, which leaves room for initiating other energy projects to increase efficiency. Sandy storm’s victims were given disaster relief funds as a part of the Low income Home Energy Assistance Program. New York received around $340 million under the energy program. People rebuilding have been asked to consider reduced air infiltration and insulated air ducts.

Home owners can expect more technologies and grants to be introduced for increasing energy efficiency. With implementation of LEDs, energy-efficient appliances, cooling and light-emitting diode, they can drastically reduce the cost of utilities. Rates for energy efficient plans are available in different states. For example, home owners living in Texas can get rate quotes from sites like www.shopelectricityratestexas.com, while home owners living in Florida can get quotes from Public Power.

Apart from saving energy which will help to cut down the cost, home owners are also playing a major role in protection of the environment. They’ll continue to support for using of energy-efficient solutions.

Protests in Egypt Claim Tampering

Even as the voting has starting in Egypt's constitutional referendum, there are accusations of vote tampering already. With all of the concern, there is word that the Muslim Brotherhood is stuffing the ballots.
On Friday Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Amir Roshdy vigorously denied rumors that 200,000 ballots had been pre-printed in Kuwait to rig the vote there, the daily Al-Masry al-Youm reported. Roshdy also denied that people who were seen handing out flyers printed on the official letterhead of the Egyptian Embassy in Kuwait encouraging people to vote 'yes' were in any way actually connected with the Embassy, claiming they had merely used the letterhead.
Anti-Islamist and opposition leaders used the last day before the referendum to try and get their message out to vote 'no.'
The opposition is right to be concerned, especially with so many accusations.

Obama to name John Kerry Next Secretary of State

From the NY Daily News:
President Obama has chosen Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, according to a report.

Obama will announce his choice of Kerry in the coming weeks, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing a source.

The White House has not confirmed the selection.

It is widely known that Kerry was interested in the job, and the former presidential nominee emerged as the clear favorite after another contender, UN Ambassador Susan Rice, withdrew from consideration last week.

Why did Adam Lanza Commit the Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School?

Questions are innumerable about Adam Lanza, the disgusting piece of human excrement that murdered 20 children yesterday. Sadly, one of the greatest questions that linger is why would anyone, even someone as mentally deranged as Lanza, take the lives of little girls and boys.

At the moment, there is no clear-cut answer. Some are blaming the fact that Lanza was autistic on the shooting. This is certainly not the case; being autistic would not cause such a crime. Medication that he was taking, however, could have contributed to it.

Lanza also murdered his mother, who worked at the school. Some experts point out that there could be a connection between this and the tragedy. But this is nothing more than speculation.

Unfortunately, in the face of unspeakable evil, there are so many questions yet to be answered. Why Adam Lanza would commit such a disgusting act is yet to be known. But one this is clear: even if there is a "motive," this in no way forgives the reprehensible acts that Lanza took on December 14, 2012.

Opinion: Build The Death Star

The world was set ablaze by the news 25,000 citizens have signed a petition for the White House to construct the "death star" and according to the rules of the petition website, the government has to issue an official response to the absurd proposal.

However, I feel compelled to ask, why don't we build the death star? On a much smaller scale, of course, but still...

Imagine the power a nation would have if they controlled a super weapon that orbited the Earth and had the capability to eliminate entire country's with a destructive payload unimaginable by even today's standards of 21st century warfare.

Sure, the cost would be astronomical, but we would essentially wipe out any and all unemployment not just in the United States, but across the western world, with the manual labor needed to build the monstrosity, and after that - the tens of thousands of citizens needed to operate the death star on a day to day basis.

And it would essentially bring the world to America's knees... As anyone willing to screw with us would have to deal with the full power of advanced western technology and weaponry, and our complete and utter disregard of any international treaties that might prohibit us... Because, please, really? You're going to screw with this...

Just don't fly any X-Wings into our trenches... Please
What say you?

Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven

Everybody wants an “A” but nobody wants to study.  Everybody wants to be rich but nobody wants to save.  Everybody wants to lose weight but nobody wants to exercise.  Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die.  No matter how you say it, the desire for something without the willingness to do the hard things required to achieve it, will always lead to disappointment.  This is the cadence of the conundrum, the drumbeat of the do-nothing dreamer, the national anthem of the nihilist; the perennial I want but I will not work formula for failure.

The signature phrase for the conservatives of this generation of Americans should be, “We all want a sound economy but we aren’t willing to endure the life-style changes it would take to get there.”

Case in point: the coming Fiscal Cliff, the looming disaster of sequestration that every talking head on every network blathers about endlessly, “It will happen” “It won’t happen.”  Pick a side and it will be argued back and forth hour after hour, “The President won’t let it happen, “The President wants it to happen.” Over and over we are barraged by the same few people who constitute the pundocracy of America debate what will happen.  There is only one thing they are all agreed upon.  If we go over this cliff, created by a vote of Congress and a signature by the President it will be terrible for our country.  Why stop there? It will be terrible for the entire world.

Just think, if we Americans raise our taxes and reign in our drunken sailor spending binge it will be a disaster for us and for everyone who draws breath on this planet. Not to worry we, the poor unwashed in fly-over country, don’t have to scratch our pumpkin heads and wonder why it would be a disaster if our country took the steps necessary to save our economy the network appointed chatter chiefs are quick to tell us.

One side says raising taxes on anyone in a weak economy may push us over into a recession.  This of course comes from the people who evidently don’t buy their own bread, pump their own gas, or know any of the millions who are now permanently out of work, in other words personally prosperous people who believe the Great Recession actually ended.  The other side says raising taxes on anyone they don’t consider rich would be a disaster.

Both sides agree that at least half of the spending cuts would be a disaster.  One side points at defense spending as a surrender of national security.  While the other side points at cuts in entitlements as throwing grandma off the cliff.

The answers they propose are as predictable as a Hallmark Christmas movie.  The Progressive Democrats say raise the taxes on the evil rich and cut spending to the defense department.  The Progressive Republicans say raise revenues by closing loop holes and cut spending on entitlements.  The problem with this is that just like Representative Paul Ryan’s draconian budget it still never gets us to a balanced budget let alone paying down the principle on the National Debt.  Both sides favor plans that keep on borrowing even if it might be at lower levels than at present.  Maybe we will only borrow thirty six cents of every dollar instead of forty six.  Wow!  That should really make our arrival at the ash heap of History a few moments later.

And that is the heart of the problem.  Or as another old saying tells us nobody wants their own ox gored.  It is the “Not in my backyard syndrome” applied by everyone to something.  We all want cuts in spending but not in our spending.  We all agree that wasteful programs should die but every program has its supporters.  This is where reality takes a bite out of dreams.  Unless we balance our budget and reverse the slide into bankruptcy our days as a great power, let alone our days as the world’s only super power, are numbered, and everyone knows China is counting off the numbers.

Looking around in the cloistered world of self-appointed opinion writers I hate to have to be the one to tell my fellow Americans this but we have to do the work to get the “A,” save the money to get rich, do the exercises to lose the weight, and we most assuredly will have to die to go to heaven.

We, through our elected representatives, have spent like there was no tomorrow until tomorrow is mortgaged to pay for today without asking the question, “How are we going to pay for tomorrow?”  I guess we have always figured we could use the day after tomorrow for collateral.  That may work for a while or at least until our children and grandchildren have been sold into slavery to the highest bidder.

Unfortunately my generation, the Boomers who proudly offered Bill Clinton and George Bush the Younger as our contribution to the pantheon of American Presidents, has kicked the can down the road while paraphrasing Louis XV on the eve of the French Revolution, “After me the flood.”  Or as many fellow boomers have phrased it to me, “It won’t crash in my lifetime.”

Now the handwriting is on the wall, the torches and pitchforks are seen on the horizon, and it is becoming obvious though the end may not come on December 21, 2012 it isn’t too far off.  Anyone who isn’t comatose in the cultural soma of social media and the game can see you can’t continue to spend more than you bring in forever.  The interest on the National Debt is going to eat us alive. Our creditors won’t keep lending us more and more once they realize our only answer is to print our way out of debt.  Ask any scam artist trying to live by charging their Visa to the MasterCard when the shop keepers start cutting up the cards the happy days aren’t here anymore.

What we need to do is go over the fiscal cliff, and instead of using the ensuing economic contraction as an opportunity to re-launch the United States in a fundamentally new direction tighten our belts.  We have got to go through a period of austerity to return to reality.

Endlessly printing money always leads to money that isn’t worth anything.  Even if our current leaders think they have figured out a soft landing for this lead balloon they haven’t, and when that bubble pops the economy stops.

Our fiscal conservatives who want to return to a gold standard should tell everyone that doing that will cause a contraction in the value of money that will resemble a train going 100 miles an hour hitting a brick wall.  There just isn’t enough gold in the world to value every American dollar at one dollar.  A return to gold would give us an economy based on real money, and that would be a good thing.  However the proponents of this course need to be honest about the transition from funny money to real money: there will be a great deal of pain on the way back to reality.

There are plans to do something from the right. There is the plan to cut off Social Security at 55. Everyone younger having paid into the world’s greatest Ponzi scheme all their lives get another deal.  Even if it is a better deal they will still feel like they are getting ripped off because they are.  There is also the plan to cut all the wasteful spending out of Medicare but leave it all over at the Pentagon.   These plans won’t fly because they only have one wing.

The left has a plan too.  Raise taxes on the rich, and keep on spending.  This may eventually pass due to the President’s perceived strength and the Republican leadership’s Progressive inclinations and acceptance of defeat but it will only continue our progress towards national suicide.

The fact is we can either choose to cut the spending, raise revenues, and save the future or we can continue to stagger like drunken sailors spending our children’s as yet unearned money until our creditors pull in the leash.  I know calling for higher tax revenues is heresy to most conservatives, and I am not in favor of the government taking one more cent than necessary for Constitutional purposes.  Saving the country from ruin is the ultimate Constitutional purpose.

Like any household that is buried in debt we need more money and less spending; the trick is getting both.  The slight-of-hand artists in Washington are great at striking Grand Bargains for taxes now and spending cuts that never materialize.  That never has worked and it certainly won’t work now.  We could do it without tax increases.  Without taxes the spending cuts would have to be much deeper and more painful, and we can’t get anyone to sign on for the pain of cuts with taxes.

Here’s the secret of raising revenues with taxes.  We can’t raise rates which merely increases tax avoidance.  A flat tax would bring in increased revenues by growing the economy and would indeed be fair.  In contrast raising rates in a progressive tax system is merely punitive and is a populist trick to buy the votes of those who earn less.

If we don’t endure the pain now, if we don’t endure the necessary radical fiscal surgery despite years on life support, decades of refusing to take our medicine will finally cause our economy, and with it our dreams of a brighter future, to die.  However, we won’t get to go to heaven.  Instead we will go into debtor’s prison as our beloved nation sinks beneath mountains of debt into the second or third rank.  We will watch as a tomorrow which could have been ours becomes someone else’s.

When our children and grandchildren ask us, “Where’s my inheritance?” we will have to say, “We spent it yesterday.”  When they ask, “Where’s our future?” we will have to say, “We spent that too.”

Instead of being pushed over the cliff, let’s dive over and then resist any attempt to restore the spending.  Let’s take the pain so our children can gain.

Susan Rice withdraws Name from Consideration for Secretary of State

Dun dun duuuuun. From the Washington Post:
United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice has pulled her name out of consideration for nomination as the next secretary of state.

“If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly – to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,” Rice wrote in a letter to President Obama obtained by NBC News. “That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country…Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time.”

Rice has come under sustained criticism from Republicans both for her handling of questions about the attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi.

Jacob Tyler Roberts Identified as Oregon Mall Shooter

From the AP via Yahoo:
The gunman who killed two people and himself in a shooting rampage at an Oregon mall was 22 years old and used a stolen rifle from someone he knew, authorities said Wednesday.

Jacob Tyler Roberts had armed himself with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and had several fully loaded magazines when he arrived at a Portland mall on Tuesday, said Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts.

The sheriff said the rifle jammed during the 22-year-old's attack, but he managed to get it working again. He later shot himself. The sheriff said authorities don't yet have a motive.

A law enforcement official has told The Associated Press the shooter did not have a criminal record. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Egypt's Constitutional Hell Nears End

The months long battle over Egypt's proposed post-Mubarak constitution will reach its climax the next two Saturday's as millions of citizens head to their local polls and cast their ballots under the opposition's threats of boycotts and judge's refusals to monitor polling sites.

There is little to applaud of Egypt's entire constitutional process thus far, as the opposition left the draft working to islamists after it was apparent their viewpoints were not going to be heard and Morsi essentially declared war on democracy when he decreed himself the right to legislate and not be challenged last month, which has resulted in a proposal unfriendly to individual liberties.

And then you add the violent street clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood and the opposition and we have a constitutional vote upcoming amid such intensity as few could have predicted when this entire process initiated with the fall of Hosni Mubarak in early 2011.

Sadly, the opposition likely has little chance of blocking ratification, as the Brotherhood's strength and organization cannot be challenged by the secularists and liberals standing so strongly against this horrific proposal, that has likely seen the government break every pre-establish rule and law to pass at their terms on their timeline.

Should be interesting to see how the results effect Egypt's shattered public discourse.

What say you?

What Will Happen on December 21, 2012?

Owning my own home

Guest post from: Constance Rodgers

I thought owning my own house would be more fun than it actually is. What it actually is, though, is a lot of work, particularly the yard work. I spent a long time working on the logistics of the house like getting the water hooked up and going to the Just Energysite to find out about my energy options. I guess I really just thought about all the best parts of owning a home – not having to pay rent, not having any annoying neighbors, not needing to worry when rent rates went up, etc. What I didn’t think about was all the time that goes into keeping up a yard and how much it costs when your fridge breaks or the property tax bill comes, you know? My dad is really good at real estate and for whatever reason I kind of bumped back when he tried to give me advice. I didn’t want to hear it because I thought I was old enough to make these decisions on my own but now I really wish I had listened to him about getting in over my head. There’s something to be said for having less responsibility but be ‘wasting’ more money although I am glad I’ve got a mortgage historyand feel like I’m a mature adult for the first time in my life. I hope things get easier and I’m sure they will, honestly, because there’s nowhere to go but up from here! I think the worst thing about my particular house is that it needs a lot of work and I bought it thinking the renovations would be a snap. Boy was I wrong about that! Who would have thought it would take me over 48 hours to install tile in the bathroom? I can’t afford to hire a contractor so I’m going to have to suck it up and put in more elbow grease until this place gets finished…

Moving to Texas

Thanks for the post from Sylvester Campbell
I really hate moving so much but it’s time I went back home. I’ve loved being in California for the last ten years but my dad is sick and I need to be back home closer to my family. My sisters both stayed in Texas and built lives there (they’ve each got three kids) and since I’m the single one with a job that can really be done from anywhere it just made sense for me to come home and help out with dad’s care. I’ve been searching for the finishing touches on my new house – I need to get the outside painted and I went online and looked at electriccompaniesindallas.com/ to see about lowering my electricity bills. I finally bought a house (I can’t believe the first house I ever bought is in Texas – who would have thought!?) and I really can’t wait to make it my own. It’s hard for me to face the fact that dad’s not going to be with us forever but I guess it’s just a fact of life when you get this age. My sisters have been doing a great job of managing his care when they can, particularly since Darlene is a nurse. I really wish there was more help I could give mom but it’s tough – she’s working full time and trying to deal with the fact that her husband isn’t going to live to see any more grandkids. I know that sounds really morbid but it’s the holidays and it’s all I can think about. Who would have thought I’d be the one trying to manage everyone? I’m the one who was always off doing his own thing and making myself crazy worrying about whether or not I’d be able to pay my rent! Here I am owning a house and being able to afford life’s amenities. I never imagined I’d be the responsible one in this situation, I can tell you that!
