Presidential Honesty and the Benghazi Scandal

On September 11, 2012, the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked by terrorists linked to Al Qaeda. US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed. After the attack, the black flag of Al Qaeda was raised over the compound.

Prior to the attack, the President’s re-election campaign had boasted of his foreign policy accomplishments by pointing to the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and the purported claim that Al Qaeda had been decimated and was no longer a threat to the US.  Thus the idea that we were far safer than when Obama took office was thought to immunize the President against any charges of failure in his conduct of foreign policy

However, long before the attack, Al Qaeda had shown increasing strength, as it took over the northern parts of Mali, establishing a sanctuary similar to what it once had in Afghanistan.

Further, Bruce Reidel, formerly a Middle East analyst in the CIA and a member of President Clinton's National Security Council, wrote last July that what was happening in Libya and across the Middle East was a comeback for al-Qaeda.

Further, In Libya, the Muslim Brotherhood had joined forces with al-Qaeda and its affiliates to overthrow the former leader, Muammar Gaddafi. (Obama sided with the anti- Gaddafi forces, thus helping both Al Qaeda and Islamist fundamentalists)

To preserve the fiction that terrorism was waning under Obama, it became critical to the campaign to deny that groups tied to terrorism might have been involved in the Benghazi attack. Such an admission would undermine the administration’s re-election prospects.

Conveniently, an amateurish video poking ridicule at the Prophet Mohammed had been made by an American, and was being met with anger throughout the Arab Middle East. It was not a big step to try to tie the Benghazi attack to this phenomenon, taking the pressure off the idea that terrorists might be responsible.  And so an obscure, barely watched video, received enormous publicity thanks to President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and others.

So for a period of two weeks after the attack, a parade of Obama administration personnel, including the President, claimed repeatedly that the attack was the result of an anti-Muslim video that insulted the Prophet, and refused to blame terrorists for the attack.

However, other information was rapidly accumulating. According to Dore Gold, within hours of the attack, “U.S. intelligence agencies intercepted communications between members of Ansar al-Sharia, the main Libyan militia behind the operation, and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.”

Further, the Associated Press, claimed that they were told by US officials that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack that there was evidence that the attack was carried out by militants, and not a spontaneous mob upset about the video ridiculing Mohammed.

There were other problems, with related questions about lax security at the Libyan compound, as well as indications that requests for improving security had been refused by the administration, and that Ambassador Stevens had feared for his safety.

This will play an important role in the election on Nov 6. Jennifer Rubin has stated that “The Obama administration’s shifting accounts of the fatal attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, have left President Obama suddenly exposed on national security and foreign policy, a field where he had enjoyed a seemingly unassailable advantage over Mitt Romney in the presidential race.”

Despite accumulated clear evidence to the contrary, the President and his colleagues clung to the video explanation. On five Sunday talk shows on Sept 16, 5 days after the attack, UN Ambassador Susan Rice claimed that the attack and the deaths of four Americans in Libya was a result of a spontaneous demonstration against the anti-Muslim video. She further claimed that the lethal attack in Benghazi was preceded by peaceful protests.

On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Ambassador Rice said:

“It began spontaneously in Benghazi as a reaction to what had transpired some hours earlier in Cairo, where, of course, as you know, there was a violent protest outside of our embassy sparked by this hateful video.... We do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned".

Then there was the Vice-Presidential debate.  According to Andrew McCarthy, the Vice-President was totally dishonest.  At the beginning of the debate when Biden was asked about the fact that the administration had claimed that reaction to the anti-Muslim video, and not terrorism, had generated the violence, he claimed that Obama was simply relying on the intelligence information he was given, and stated unequivocally that the intelligence community told the administration that there were protesters (even thought the intelligence community knew within a day that it was not due to the video.)

While this claim was outrageous, Biden was unable to be straight about many related matters. He denied that the administration refused to provide adequate security for the diplomats in Benghazi. Our diplomats in Libya knew that they were in danger. They communicated their fears to Washington, pleading for additional protection. Yet Biden denied this. “We weren’t told they wanted more security again. We did not know they wanted more security again.”

On Sept 20, President Obama appeared on Univision where he referred to the anti-Muslim video. He said,  “What we’ve seen over the last week, week and a half, is something that actually we've seen in the past, where there is an offensive video or cartoon directed at the prophet Muhammad”

On Sept 25, President Obama appeared on ABC’s “The View” Here was the exchange:

QUESTION:  “I heard Hillary Clinton say it was an act of terrorism. Is it? What do you say?”

OBAMA: “We are still doing an investigation”.

And again, on Sept 25, 14 days after the attack, President Obama addressed the UN and attributed the attack to the video, shamelessly advancing the same excuse.  “That is what we saw play out in the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world.  Now, I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney finally stated that the terrorism conclusion was ‘self-evident’ after he had spent the previous eight days describing a very different account.
Not everyone got it wrong. The State Department claimed that no one in the department ever believed that the attack was the result of the video. How could this be? As Jennifer Rubin points out, the State Department got it right, but the President did not?
The search for an explanation different from a terrorist attack is natural for an administration that wishes to continue to claim success in defeating al-Qaeda. Further, it seems likely that Obama expected to prevail.
Could this all be the result of massive incompetence, related to inept advisors, and to a disengaged but arrogant President who thinks himself too knowledgeable to attend national security briefings?  Here is what former Obama advisor Rosa Brooks has to say:
“He was a visionary candidate, but as president, he has presided over an exceptionally dysfunctional and un-visionary national security architecture — one that appears to drift from crisis to crisis, with little ability to look beyond the next few weeks. His national security staff is squabbling and demoralized, and though senior White House officials are good at making policy announcements, mechanisms to actually implement policies are sadly inadequate.”

Or could it be a result of poor skill and judgment? After all, this is a President who refuses to use the work jihadists, who believes Al Qaeda is finished, and who thinks that he can charm the Iranian mullahs into giving up their nuclear ambitions.
It is a cliché that the cover up is always worse than the underlying crime. This has been seen over and over, the best example being Nixon and Watergate. And to blame the attack on the video was a means of covering up the failure to eliminate terrorism as a threat to the US.

However, Watergate was different in at least two ways. First, no one died. And secondly, there was one, and only one cover up. In this case, it became more complicated, as there was an attempt to cover-up the cover-up.
Faced with the charge that he had failed to label the attacks terrorism, Obama tired to back up and now claim that in fact, he had called them terrorist attacks within one day of the event.  In the Town Hall debate, the President claimed that he had called the attack a terror attack on Sept 12, the day after the assault.

However, by claiming that he knew it was an act of terror the next day, he is attempting to cover up the first cover up.  This creates a new problem for the President. If he knew this to be the case within one day, how does he account for the two weeks in which so many, including himself, blamed the attacks on the video?
If he figured out in one day that this was a planned terrorist attack, why was Jay Carney sent out on Sept. 14 to insist it was all about an anti-Muslim video? Why did U.N. Ambassador Rice go on five Sunday talk shows tying the murder of four Americans to a protest growing out of a video? Why did the president dwell on the anti-Muslim video in his Sept. 20 Univision appearance, and again at the United Nations on Sept 25?  Declaring that the president knew on Sept. 12 that he was dealing with terrorism means that he and many others were subsequently engaging in serious mendacity.
And so we have two conflicting possibilities, both claimed by the President.
One possibility is that President Obama, as he claimed in the Town Hall debate, knew and clearly stated that the attack in Libya was in fact a terror attack on Sept 12, one day after the event.

The other possibility is that the entire apparatus of the administration, Joseph Biden, Jay Carney, Susan Rice, and President Obama himself continued to refer to the attack, not as an attack by terrorists, but rather as a response to a video.

These cannot both be true. So the President has been caught deliberately misleading the American people.

The scandal involves Presidential dishonesty. It also involves a failure to protect our diplomatic personnel, and the failure to attend to intelligence warnings. Congressional committees are demanding to know what the intelligence agencies knew and when they knew it.

This is a serious problem.  Foreign policy does not usually play a major role in an election, but in this one, one that is both very close and highly contentious, this scandal might be all it takes to reject the current President.

Mitt: Win This One for Dad

At one point in the 1968 Presidential election, the most likely Republican nominee wasn't Richard Nixon nor Nelson Rockefeller, but Michigan Governor George Romney, father of the year's GOP nominee. The elder Romney was a well respected former auto manufacturing business leader who had a strong shot at the nod...

However, with his campaign beginning to sink against the tide of Nixon's resurgence in the primaries, Mitt's father made one of the worst political blunders in American history - accusing our Generals of brainwashing him to support the Vietnam war... Needless to say, his campaign floundered almost immediately afterwards.

Now, George Romney wasn't a bad fellow whatsoever... He was a self made man who came to both great power and wealth during his life, but couldn't help but moving with the great majority of the population on a unpopular war in the worst way imaginable.

Hell, not even Joe Biden has said anything that clueless...... Well, maybe he has, but picking on the insane is just too easy.

That's not the point though.

Tonight Mitt Romney will take the stage for the third and final debate against President Obama on the matter of foreign policy, where the incumbent has a perceived advantage because of his "successes" in the realm, but most of which are insignificant and are easily outnumbered by his actual failures. This is Romney's chance to show Americans he not only has the financial know-how to make us prosperous, but the wisdom to keep us safe.

I expect another solid debate performance, and if the issue of Libya remains as potent as the last debate, I believe he could win hands down if he knocks it out the park by calling the President out on his lies... But I also think there is another factor that will be weighing on Romney during his final debate performance.

His father.

Over four decades ago he worked on, campaigned for and strongly supported his father's presidential campaign, but watched them go down in a self-inflicted wound of epic proportions. Mitt idolized his father, and he himself has been running for President essentially since 2007, with his moment to succeed or fail just fifteen days away.

This election isn't just about winning for Mitt's sake, or for the ideology and proposals he will bring with him to the Oval Office, but for his father... the man he loved and watched fail to achieve Mitt's greatest dream...

So Mitt.... Win this one for dad. Lets finally enshrine the Romney name in American history...

Radcliffe Franklin Haughton Found Dead

From the Australian:
A COUNTY dispatcher in Wisconsin says the suspect in a mass shooting at a spa outside Milwaukee has been found dead.

Christine Bannister is a dispatch supervisor for the Waukesha County communications centre. She says 45-year-old Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, of Brown Deer, has been found dead. She could not provide more details.

Police say three people were killed and four wounded in the shooting at the Azana Day Spa. Authorities spent much of the afternoon looking for the gunman.

They say they believe the shooting was related to a domestic dispute.

The man left behind what appears to be an improvised explosive device, which has prevented police from searching the entire two-story building in Brookfield, a suburb of Milwaukee, police chief Daniel Tushaus told reporters.

FInding Your Way in the San Antonio Real Estate Market

The economy today is difficult for just about everyone. Especially in the middle class, we see many indicators becoming more difficult for working and retired people of any age. With unemployment up, gas prices up, food prices up, and real estate prices down it would appear that the economy today is not ready for a great takeoff. But under these circumstances, there are many opportunities for the average person. It might not seem that way at first, especially as consumer spending is not surging and more people are out of work. However, in every economy-- no matter how poor and no matter how it looks-- there are ways for the average person to make some money and build a better fiscal foundation for themselves and their family. Looking after the financial wellbeing of your family's future is the most important obligation that any person can have. That is why proper planning and research are necessary to see where a family is and where it should be heading. With so many opportunities out there, it is important to remember where your personal fiscal situation shapes up against the economy as a whole. Having this as a clearer picture is a great chance to save up for the future and make the plans that you need to succeed.

For example, the real estate market does appear to be difficult. House prices have fallen dramatically and many people have been foreclosed upon. Still, despite these problems there are opportunities out there for people to stake a claim in the property market and build upon a future. Interest rates across the country are at or near historic lows. With both 30 year and 15 year mortgages below 4%, this can be a golden opportunity to turn a down payment into a property. These rates foster lending for the families of the country and are your way to begin or continue your success in the real estate market. Even though housing prices are lower, this can be an advantage for people looking to expand. With prices plunging over 40% over the last five years (and in some areas even much more) this can be a great chance to build equity without destroying all of your savings. In fact, in some cases it can be a chance to have some monthly income if you are comfortable with renting. This way you can build equity while also providing you and your family a chance to earn the extra money you can use towards vacations, gas, or retirement. This is the case with the San Antonio real estate market. This is a great opportunity for the emerging buyer. Texas has a rapidly growing population, with cities like San Antonio growing much quicker than the national average. With prices and interest rates depressed, this can be the chance to buy that first house for your family. It can also be that chance to buy a rental or vacation property. Take a look at all of the options out there and see how they can help you and your family determine and solidify your financial future.

Peace in Our Time; Obama and Chamberlain

“When experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.“  George Santayana

In the most classic case of appeasement in history,  Hitler demanded in 1938 that Czechoslovakia cede part of its territory to Germany, (the Sudetenland which contained a majority of Germans). When Czechoslovakia refused, Germany prepared for for war. Fearing a major war, Neville Chamberlain, then prime Minister of Britain, forced Czechoslovakia to agree to give up this part of its territory. He then travelled to Munich for a meeting of Germany, Italy, Britain and France, (Czechoslovakia was excluded from the meeting) where an agreement was signed on Sept 30, 1938, leading Chamberlain to boast that he had averted war.

Fear of war was very high in Britain.  The tremendous toll of World War 1 was still a recent memory. The lethal terror of German bombers had been demonstrated at Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. And so when Chamberlain announced the agreement, and said that he had brought about “peace for our time” his actions were very popular.

While the British people were cheering, the lesson for Hitler  was that he had a free hand and did not have to fear retaliation from Britain or France. This led him to subsequently be far more aggressive, and the  combination of Hitler’s aggression and Britain’s appeasement set the stage for World War 2

After Chamberlain's return to Britain he told parliament that “The real triumph is that it has shown that representatives of four great Powers can find it possible to agree on a way of carrying out a difficult and delicate operation by discussion instead of by force of arms, and thereby they have averted a catastrophe which would have ended civilization as we have known it”.

There were dissenting voices. Winston Churchill, not yet Prime Minister, warned against the agreement, referring to it as “ a total unmitigated defeat“ Not surprisingly, Churchill was labeled a war monger. In a prescient statement, Churchill  said that  "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor
and you will have war."

In less that one year, World War 2 was underway, a war that killed . 60 million persons (2.5% of the population). This was a war that was preventable, had Britain and France recognized the risks of appeasement when up against aggressive tyranny.

And now, 70 years later, we are again faced with a tyranny that has announced its intent to annihilate another nation, that is the chief sponsor of terrorists in the world today, and  that is racing to develop nuclear weapons that will be used not only against Israel but against Europe ant the US.

And once again, using the threat of military means to force Iran to give up its nuclear program is unpopular, as many citizens believe that negotiations with fanatics who welcome death is a reasonable way to proceed, long after it has become clear that this is not  working. This has been the promise of President Obama, even while it  has become crystal clear that Iran is continuing its race to have and to use the ultimate weapon.

Recently, FresnoZionism.com has written a peace outlining the possibility of an October surprise by our President that would mirror and replicate the Munich mistake.

In the article it is suggested that a former CIA operative, "Reza Khalili", claims that the Obama administration has made a deal with Iran in which Iran will temporarliy reduce its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions.

This would give Obama an enormous boost, validating his foreign policy approach, claiming that war has been avoided, and winning the election before anyone can find the whole thing is a sham.

Further, it would preclude US  military action, and make an attack by Israel almost impossible.

Further, the article claims that

"In the event that Iran doesn’t live up to the terms of the agreement, it will be that much further along, sanctions will be gone, Iran will have recouped much of its economic losses, and it may be too late for Israel, or even the US, to end the program by force.

[US] guarantees would ensure the regime’s right to peaceful enrichment, quickly remove many of the sanctions, accept that Iran’s nuclear program does not have a military dimension and relieve international pressure on the regime while it continues its nuclear program".

Such a deal would be a disaster for both Israel and the US, but would help Iran and Obama's campaign. And it would guarantee that Iran will be a nuclear power.

Can this happen between now and the election? Stay tuned.

Bombshell- CNN Memo: Obama INTENTIONALLY Given Extra Time in Debate

Just amazing. Journalism is dead. From TMZ:
Here's the full email:

"Let's start with a big round of applause for Candy Crowley for a superb job under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. She and her team had to select and sequence questions in a matter of hours, and then she had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her. She pulled it off masterfully.

The reviews on Candy's performance have been overwhelmingly positive but Romney supporters are going after her on two points, no doubt because their man did not have as good a night as he had in Denver. On the legitimacy of Candy fact-checking Romney on Obama's Rose Garden statement, it should be stressed that she was just stating a point of fact: Obama did talk about an act (or acts) of terror, no matter what you think he meant by that at the time. On why Obama got more time to speak, it should be noted that Candy and her commission producers tried to keep it even but that Obama went on longer largely because he speaks more slowly. We're going to do a word count to see whether, as in Denver, Romney actually got more words in even if he talked for a shorter period of time."

Why Does Affirmative Action End at the Gridiron?

Have you ever pondered the fact that everyone being endowed with equal rights by our creator works out so naturally while the equality of outcome that our Progressive would-b-masters seek to impose is impossible to achieve without treating people differently?  Have you ever noticed that whenever the government wishes to give anyone anything they have to first take it from someone else?

Since everyone obviously has different skills, talents, and ambitions people inevitably perform and produce at different levels.  Therefore to make everyone end up in the same place it is necessary to hold some back and artificially advance others.

For example if we wanted to treat everyone equally with regard to taxes we would have a flat tax with no deductions as in everyone pays 10%.  If you make one million dollars or one thousand dollars you pay 10%.  That would be equal treatment before the law and in my opinion that would be fair.  However in the Progressives version of a fair tax system designed to promote equality, people who earn different amounts are taxed at different rates.  If you earn more you pay more.  That may sound good to some, but how is it fair?

In education if equality was really the desired result everyone would be judged by the same standards for admission regardless of race, creed, color or any other mitigating factor.  Everyone would take the same tests and everyone would be graded exactly the same with admission based upon the score.  In the world of American Academia as administrated by the Progressives categories of people are judged by different standards and they call this fairness.

Look at the bewildering array of social programs that have been implemented to ensure equality and fairness in the Progressive utopia.  From food stamps and free cell phones to state subsidized education in criminal justice for convicted felons, these ill-conceived and often abused programs turn the safety net into a hammock  that beg the question Ayn Rand was known to ask, “At whose expense?”  If someone gets free food, free education; free anything the question we should ask is, at whose expense?   The next question should be, do those who are paying the freight for this pleasure cruise do so voluntarily or are they being coerced?  If they are being coerced into paying for someone else’s benefits what makes this any different than theft?

It’s as if the Progressives have tried to change our original national motto from” E Pluribus Unum” to “Stand and Deliver” or have they changed our present national motto “In God We Trust” to “You Can’t Fight City Hall.”  Or as if the new national anthem should be, “Happy Days Are Here Again – Unless You Work For a Living.”

One of the most often quoted and misquoted statements concerning History tells us, those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it and today we are seeing the fruits of this truism.  The two great revolutions of the eighteenth century, the American and the French, were mirror images of each other in several important ways.  The American Revolution made a declaration to the entire world that the rights they sought were endowed upon all men by their creator.  The French in the Declaration of the Rights of Man placed government as the source of these rights.  The American Revolution sought to rid themselves of an all-powerful government with a limited government so that individuals could be free to prosper on their own.  The French sought to replace an all-powerful government based upon birth with an all-powerful government based on merit believing that where the former one wanted to maintain the status quo with elites on top while the latter one would promote equality with elites on top.

The American experiment created the freest, richest, most powerful country in the History of the world.  In France after the Terror, after the Triumvirate, and after the Empire the people saw that they had merely replaced one elite group with another.  Then the Kings came back.

In America today our federally controlled education has led to generations of people who have never learned History or Civics.  Now the progressive Pied Pipers are leading the uninformed to exchange the equality of opportunity our Founders established for the equality of outcome Europe has chased after since the French Revolution.  With a public not knowing enough to know the difference these bait and switch tactics seem to be working, and after one hundred years of a living constitution the Constitution is nearly dead.

We have one more election to stem the tide as we look for a chance to reverse the flow and return America to limited government, individual freedom, and economic opportunity.  If we miss this opportunity we may soon experience the equality of mediocrity as we descend into the collectivist pit of self-immolation.  This pit is typified by big government programs meant to redress some perceived inequality.  Redressing inequality sounds good.  The problem lies in the fact that to do so you need a big enough government to enforce the desired result, and governments are made up of fallible people who all have their own prejudices and desires.

James Madison, in Federalist 51 reflected that, “If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.”  Men aren’t angels.  Which is why he continued, “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”

One program which serves as a fitting example of the impossibility of living a consistent life when trained, framed and constrained by the attempts to impose an artificial man-made, government enforced equality is Affirmative Action.  Which some may argue has now reached the White House.

Why Does Affirmative Action End at the Gridiron?

Even the Colleges that are the most rapid in their interpretation and enforcement of Affirmative Action seem to forget these artificial standards when it comes to their sports teams.  Have you ever wondered why that is so?  Because they want the best players on the field no matter what the ratios of black, white, yellow, red, straight, gay or other.

Don’t fall for the siren song of something for nothing, for affirmative this, and equality that.  Don’t let the perpetually re-elected hucksters fool you with their promise of a fair shot, a square deal, or of making someone else pay their fair share.  When everything is put in one pot and it is supposed to be divided equally it always seems that those who do the dividing get the fairest share of all.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis Arrested After Attempt to Blow Up Federal Reserve Bank

From the NY Post:
A Bangladeshi terrorist tried to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan this morning using a 1,000-pound bomb, according to a criminal complaint.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, of Jamaica, Queens, parked a van filled with the fake explosives — which were provided by an undercover FBI agent — outside of the Liberty Street building, authorities said, then tried to set them off using a cell phone detonator.

During a recorded meeting in Central Park with the agent, Nafis said his goal was Muslim global domination.

“I don’t want something that’s like small. I just want something big,” he said. “Something very big. Very very very very big, that will shake the whole country, that will make America, not one step ahead, change of policy, and make one step ahead, for the Muslims ... that will make us one step closer to run the whole world.”

Nafis, who is here on a student visa, came to the US to carry out a terror attack, authorities said, and claimed to have connections to al-Qaeda overseas.

Candy Crowley: The Worst Presidential Moderator in History

Aside from repeatedly interrupting Mitt Romney, aside from giving the President 9% more time than Mr. Romney, and beside the softball questions she decided on for this debate, what else could Candy Crowley do to make her performance the worst in history?

How about saying that Mr. Romney was wrong, when it turns out that he was right, then trying to go on national television and say, 'He was mainly right, but he was wrong anyway:'

Oh, and she was wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong.

Vote in Our Poll: Who Won the Debate 10/16/2012

So who won the Thrilla on the Island?

Nostradumbass climbs onto his soapbox and makes a prediction

Nostradumbass here, ready to make his prediction on tonight's Presidential debate.

As I write this, it is still a couple of hours until the debate.  I'm sitting here in Florida on vacation with my parents.  I have a magnificent view overlooking the beach and the ocean.  Last night, I watched a couple get married right down there on the beach in front of our condo.  If I had been smart enough to charge my videocamera and/or brought my charger with me, I would have some pictures for you.  As it is, I only have the pictures that I took from about 14 floors away, which is kind of far away from the action.  I was also distracted by a couple of girls in bikinis on the side of the pool.

But that's neither here nor there.  Let's talk about the debate tonight.

Let me preface this with the caveat that I have no special knowledge as to how each candidate has made his preparation for the debate.  I can only give you the lessons that I have learned from my own experience.

As I see it, Romney holds the psychological edge going into this debate.  The first reason I think that is, obviously, the trouncing that he gave in the first debate.  That is a huge psychological boost whenever you are in these kinds of situations.  It took a lot of confidence to walk into that situation in the first place.  Imagine how much more confident Romney must have become walking out of a debate in which he, to use the current vernacular, made Obama his bitch.

On the flip side, what would such a performance have done to Obama?  By one account that I have read, Obama walked out of that debate thinking that he had won, and handily.  It was only the day later that his staff let him know that he had not.  Now what does that do to one's confidence?

Completely deflates it, that's what it does.  Even for someone of Obama's self-confidence stature, that is quite a blow to the image of self-worth.

So now Obama must play catch-up.  He's got to realize that people see him as, if not behind, then at least not as far ahead in the race as he once was.  Another performance like that, and he will definitely be seen as being behind.

The problem with that thinking is that that puts a lot of pressure on Obama to perform well.  I don't know about you, but I don't perform well when there's pressure on me to perform well.  Nobody performs well when they are aware of the pressure put on them to perform well.  The only way that that pressure dissipates is when the performer puts that awareness aside, and focuses solely on performing to the best of their ability.  It is only when they are loose and not pressured that they perform best.

So the pressure is now on Obama to have a great debate.  Nothing less than great will be acceptable.

If anybody can rise to the occasion, I think it would be Obama.  Not because I think he performs well while under pressure.  I think that the default position of Obama is that he truly does think that he is the best there is at what he does, and nobody else can come close to him.  I think he has been told how special he is all of his life, and nobody has ever had the temerity to tell him otherwise.  This leads to a huge amount in his self-worth bank.

So the prediction from Nostradumbass is this:
1)  Romney will turn in another strong debate performance.
2)  Obama will be stronger than he was, but there will still be some people who will be disappointed in his performance.
3)  The liberal media will tell us that Obama was the stronger of the two, but Romney lied about some things, distorted his record on others, and flip-flopped on his previously held positions.
4)  The undecideds will remain undecided, because they are too stupid and/or lazy and/or incurious to chase down the lies told by Obama.
5)  The people who barely pay attention to politics until this time of the year will take notice of how strong Romney is, and compare it to the image that has been painted by Democratic mouthpieces and the media (but I repeat myself), and discover who has been lying to them.
6)  Republicans will discover that there are more Republicans and conservatives in America than there were before.

As a side note: I was listening to a few liberal stations on SiriusXM stations during the conventions (you are welcome for that sacrifice, by the way), and they truly believe that Obama -and themselves, by extension- are really better than us conservatives.  As such, Obama should have walked into that debate hall and mopped the floor with Romney, all without breaking a sweat.  But now, reality has slapped them in the face, and they realize that this is a struggle.  Obama MUST defeat those dumb conservatives, otherwise their world makes no sense.
