Pro-SAFE Act Leader Arrested for Taking Loaded Gun to Elementary School

Dwayne Ferguson, who has spent several decades promoting non-violence and is the leader of the anti-violence organization Mad Dads, was arrested Thursday for bringing a loaded gun to a school.

According to police, Mr. Ferguson brought a loaded handgun to Harvey Austin Elementary school on Thursday, prompting a multi-hour lockdown.

Mr. Ferguson was subsequently arrested and on Friday pleaded not guilty in court after being "charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, including having a loaded weapon on school grounds."

According to Mr. Ferguson, who spoke to the press, he stated that he simply "did not realize" that he brought a loaded weapon into a school full of children.

Some supporters of Ferguson believed that it was a "mistake" that he had not intended.

"I’m sure Dwayne went into the school not thinking he had the gun on him,” Rev. James E. Giles stated. Giles is a friend of Ferguson and president of Back to Basics Outreach Ministries. “We know this for a fact, that he called out to a Buffalo police lieutenant asking why the school was in lockdown, and that they were looking for a man with a gun."

Mr. Ferguson, a member of Mad Dads, has been very vocal about New York's SAFE Act, of which he is a supporter. In fact, he stood with a New York Assemblywoman who was lobbying to make possession of a firearm on school property a felony.

He faces up to four years in prison, based on the laws he pushed.

  3. “We know this for a fact, that he called out to a Buffalo police lieutenant asking why the school was in lockdown, and that they were looking for a man with a gun.”

Why then, at that exact moment did he not reach down, check his side where he normally keeps his weapon, realize he had it on him and alert the officer immediately to no only end the lockdown but to ensure that no one was hurt.

No instead he hid, pretended he didn't know he had a 2 pound plus piece of metal strapped to his side (bull) and waited until he was found hoping he wouldn't be found.

Also the article states there was two calls to the police about a man with a gun, so much for concealed there bozo.

He screwed up, he should have to face the full penalty of the laws that he helped enact and backed.

We gun community members however should support him and help him see that this is exactly the type of situation we feared would happen and now an innocent mans life and his families lives will be irreversibly ruined due to minimum mandatory sentencing and ironically named "common sense" gun laws.
