Wal-Mart Commits to Hiring 100,000 Veterans

Wal-Mart has kicked off Memorial Day 2013 by publicly committing to hire any non active duty, honorably discharged United States veteran who comes into their store working for work within their first year off duty. Wal-Mart's goal is to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years.

As someone who has worked for Wal-Mart roughly twenty months and also briefly served in the National Guard, I can tell you from experience that the retail giant could use military like effectiveness and discipline for greater success on a local store by store basis. Not to mention but military style latrine cleanliness would be nice also...

I've heard grumblings from my co-workers and I'm sure many Wal-Mart employees are unenthusiastic for this preferential hiring, but come on... Lets be realistic here: Wal-Mart is looking to hire 100,000 veterans, the men and women who have served active duty or combat to defend our nation, and with the job climate still difficult out there - they deserve the first break.

And besides, with low staffing plaguing the 4,000 stores located in the United States, I'm sure everyone will appreciate an increase of 25 employees at every store on average over the next couple of years just from all the veteran hires, which will reduce the burden on our employee strapped shifts.

What say you?

  1. It's a good step in the right direction, at the very least.
