Occupy Wall Street Defaces 9/11 Memorial Statue

Seward Johnson’s sculpture “Double Check” has sat in Liberty Park, near Ground Zero, since 1982. The statue is of a businessman double-checking to see if he has everything in his suitcase. But it is more than just a random piece of art in the minds of millions of Americans.

After the attacks of September 11, 2001, Double Check survived the chaos. It was photographed that day, covered in ashes, reminiscent of the thousands that had fled for their lives, commemorating those who had lost theirs:

To many it is a national treasure; a reminder of what was and what we have lost.  However, to members of the Occupy Wall Street "movement," it is merely a piece of capitalist propaganda that must be attacked.

Thus, the state that commemorates an iconic day in the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans had garbage dumped all over it.  On the "businessman's" head was attached a bandana and a mask:
There are some things that are more than voicing your free speech.  Standing in a pile of hippies and shouting is part of free speech.  Even complaining about capitalism while profiting from it is part of the First Amendment.  But defacing something that commemorates the death of 3,000 Americans?  That's just disgusting.

Update- Thank you to Big Government for the link.  Also, please take a look at our new video

Update #2- Someone defending this said it was only "one individual" doing this. Yeah, this picture really looks like one person:

  1. I'm not a bit surprised! You have a bunch of lazy, good for nothing, ingrates demanding their fair share. If they got their fair share it would be next to nothing! let them eat cake,in fact stale cake!

  2. Clearly it is occupy wall street's goal as a whole to deface this statue which commemorates the death of 3,000 Americans.

Something that was done by one individual speaks for all of Occupy Wall Street ... In fact this one act proves that this movement is EVIL and should be stopped immediately ... excellent logic, you sound like a real intellectual.

    Keep it up OWS

  3. GeneralAl you should be ashamed for making such an incorrect, generalized, ignorant statement. There are plenty of people protesting on Wall St. and around the world who are hard working individuals, or who would like to be working. There are Veterans of war who have risked a lot more than you yourself have. There are a lot of TRUE patriots protesting, people who care about their country and it's citizens enough to stand up for their rights, and you act like you're better than them ? What a fucking joke, get over yourself you damn fool.

  6. Take a look at the doodle the one moron is working on in that last picture. Drawing of some asshole (Saul Alinsky) tossing a paper airplane at the Twin Towers. To the poster above, I'm sure there are some more mainstreamers there who are just voicing their frustration, but if anyone thinks that this whole thing is not organized by anarchic and far-left Communist organizations, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

  9. These are not people who have really anything of value to say to anyone. They are anarchistic morons who when pressed about their "ideas"parrot simplistic socialist demands. They fit in with the window smashers and "smash and grab" rioters than they do with anything remotely approaching an "idea". "Share the wealth" means to them making the guy walking to work past their banners and filth pay for their student loans. If ever there was a "gimme gimme" generation, this is it.

  10. There's a great poem by Emile Benoit about the events of 9/11 told through the eyes of this statue. It seems appropriate
