Kaine Running for VA Senate

Current DNC chief and former Governor Tim Kaine has announced that he is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Jim Webb. Webb barely won the election of 2006 in a close race during a Democratic wave election. Webb announced that he would not be running for another term about a month ago.

Kaine, a popular former Governor, is facing off against former Governor and Senator Jim Allen. Allen, a Republican, had served both posts before being defeated in 2006.

Kaine's announcement is not entirely unexpected, but could throw the race into a tumult. Kaine and Allen are both fairly popular and are both former Governors. With Webb out of the race it appeared that Allen may have an easier time winning his seat back. Other Democratic competitors mentioned included Tom Periello, a left-winger who lost his Congressional seat last November.

Kaine is expected to make other moves shortly. His online announcement is likely to make the race more static.

The former Virginia governor said in an online video on Tuesday that he is running for Senate because "America has big challenges and I'm convinced that Virginia has answers to help strengthen our nation."

Kaine would enter the race to succeed Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, who announced he was retiring from office after just one term.

Kaine is going to try and benefit from the increased Democratic turnout due to the Presidential race. Usually, those less serious or knowledgeable about politics come out to vote-- usually for Democrats.

  1. Package deal- if Kaine wants to take credit for 2008, then he should also take the rap for the epic beatdown his party was on the recieving end of in 2010
