Lindsey Graham Behind in Potential GOP Primary

Lindsey Graham represents one of the most conservative states in the country. The South Carolina Republican has been known for his moderate views and his partnership with Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman on various issues, including national defense.

Now it appears that the Senator may be in trouble in 2014. This comes as Republican Congressman Joe Wilson gains more prominence. Wilson famously shouted "You lie" during President Obama's speech to joint chamber of Congress.

Public Policy Polling decided to run a hypothetical poll to see how Graham would fare against Wilson. Graham has been a top target for the Tea Party and talk of a primary challenge has been rife. PPP is not the most accurate pollsters, but it is one of the most prolific.

Graham does match well against former Governor Mark Sanford who left under a cloud of ethics probes:

Graham v. Sanford
Graham: 52%
Sanford: 34%
Other/und: 14%

Graham v. Wilson:
Wilson: 43%
Graham: 41%
Other/und: 16%

Graham's approval ratings are also interesting:

Graham actually has slightly positive approval numbers with Republican primary voters at 42% happy with his performance to 40% who disapprove. But those numbers are far, far worse than Mike Castle's and Lisa Murkowski's were with GOP primary voters in their states and that didn't stop them from being taken out in the primary.

Of course, this could change depending on the political winds. In addition, multiple candidates could split the very conservative share of the vote and leave Graham with a lead.
