General Musharraf Barred From Running for Pakistani Parliament

HT: BBC

General Musharraf, who led Pakistan for nearly a decade after a 1999 coup d'etat brought him to power, recently returned to his homeland after a self-imposed four year exile in London to once again seek office and to save Pakistan.

However, with the Pakistani Taliban threatening to assassinate him with a team of suicide bombers, legal issues plaguing his return and even some forces wanting to try him for various counts of treason, General Musharraf's political hopes are anything but savory, or realistic at this point.

That last point was re-emphasized today by a Pakistani election tribunal, as they barred the General from seeking election to the 14th Pakistani Parliament on May 11th, 2013 in the Chitral Province, after he was previously denied the chance to run in three other seats.

The General is seeking an appeal from the nation's Supreme Court, but with the entire judiciary system against his bid for office, I highly doubt they will reverse the tribunal's decision and allow him to run for parliament, as his only remaining political path is forming another coup d'etat, but that is unlikely and his guaranteed death sentence.

What say you?
