French Parliament Approves Same-Sex Marriage 321-225

The French Parliament, by a solid vote of 321-225 or three-fifths of deputies present, approved same sex marriages to be legally conducted today, becoming just the fourteenth nation worldwide to authorize such ceremonies.

According to recent surveys, only a small majority support the adoption of same sex marriages in the less socially conservative and traditional minded France, which has led to unexpectedly strong opposition protests, including one in January that attracted over three hundred thousand participants in Paris.

France has become the ninth European country to legalize same sex marriage, and pending legal review, President Francois Hollande will attach his signature to his flagship social reform despite a committed and determined opposition that is still calling for a public referendum on the issue.
