Gingrich 38, Romney 17

The latest Rasmussen survey of likely GOP voters has me worried for the first time that Mitt Romney might not be able to hold on for the nomination, as Newt Gingrich has literally come out of nowhere to crack open a 21 point lead in the long undecided race. I mean, who expected Gingrich to be at 38% in this primary, at any point?

Cain has fallen back to the second-tier with 8%, while all the other candidates - with the exception of Huntsman (now at 3%) have remained steady for the past couple of surveys.

The Gingrich Surge seems to be turning into the Gingrich Tsunami, but we still have several weeks before Iowa and New Hampshire head to the polls, kicking off the 2012 battle for real and pitting 2 strong candidates head-to-head for the GOP nomination.

What say you?
