Syrian National Council: We Need UN Peacekeepers

The ante was raised once again as the Syrian opposition movement demanded more action from the international community. This comes after a raging gunbattle that killed at least 71. This also comes as pressure is mounting within the region. As Ryan wrote earlier, Jordanian King Abdullah suggested that Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad step down.

Now, Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, is calling for an international presence in the country. The SNC is an umbrella group of different interests, including Liberals and Islamists. Russia has not been keen to allow any such pressure.
Ghalioun, in a news conference held at Interfax's Moscow office, said that the Syrian National Council was not asking for military intervention but rather "blue helmet" peacekeepers from the United Nations.

The peacekeepers were needed to ensure the safety of civilians and allow journalists free access to the country, Ghalioun said.
This would certainly be a big step, but it's unlikely at this stage.
