Berlusconi Survives Confidence Vote

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, who has been rocked by financial strife and personal scandals, survived a close confidence vote (316-301) in parliament earlier today. If his conservative coalition government failed, he would have had to call for immediate elections, or resign in disgrace.

This is probably good news for Italy, because as bad as Berlusconi is on moral issues - he's not a socialist, and that's the last thing anyone needs in power right now, especially when the country is struggling to avoid economic collapse. His government has moved forward on approving a balanced budget and is one of our strongest military allies.

I am not exactly doing cartwheels in celebration, but this is definitely good news. Hopefully, Italy's Premier can focus on balancing his country's budget instead of his wild personal side, which is just distracting and a little embarrassing for defenders of his government, both home and abroad.

What say you?
