Hurricane Irene Back Up to Category 3

Bad news:
Hurricane Irene strengthened to a Category 3 storm on the five-step Saffir Simpson scale as it swirled up from the Caribbean toward the U.S. East Coast.

At 8 a.m. EDT, Irene was located about 55 miles southeast of Acklins island, Bahamas, and about 335 miles southeast of Nassau and was packing maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour (185 km/h).

Authorities in Bahamas have changed the hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos islands to a tropical storm warning.

The core of Irene will move across the southeastern and central Bahamas Wednesday and over the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday.
