Interview with Michael Prell, Author of Underdogma

Today Pundit Press is proud to present interview number 35 in our ongoing interview series. Today we're happy to interview Michael Prell, the author of Underdogma. Mr. Prell has written what has been called "the first great Tea Party book." Pundit Press is going to run a review of the new book within the next several weeks. We want to thanks Mr. Prell again for his time and wish him continued success. Please consider purchasing the book!

1. When and why did you decide to write Underdogma?

When I see things that don’t appear to make sense, it bothers me. Like Americans protesting against America and cheering for foreign terrorists who would kill them if given the chance, or gays and lesbians championing Palestinians and railing against Israel—even though Palestinians kill homosexuals, while Israel protects gay rights and even hosts World Pride Day. So I look for patterns. The pattern I found—in these and many issues that shape our world today—is that many people have a non-thinking, gut instinct to take the side of “the little guy,” the underdog. And, while this “Underdogma” instinct is relatively harmless while watching the NCAA Final Four, it has profound consequences when applied to big issues like American power.

2. What was your favorite part of writing the book?

My favorite part of writing Underdogma was actually writing Underdogma. I refuse to write something unless I understand it from all angles, so I actually spent close to five years researching Underdogma, and only a few months writing it.

3. What does the concept of Underdogma evolve into?

“Evolve” is an interesting word, because evolution is survival of the fittest and strongest, while Underdogma demonizes the strong for being strong, and champions the weak for being weak. So it is more of a devolution, away from the American Spirit that made America great and powerful, toward a rejection of American power and a demonization of those in America who have achieved wealth and power (which was once known as the American Dream).

4. Would the US dropping to second in terms of GDP dispel some of the negative attention it has
received since 1945?

Those who practice Underdogma hate America for being powerful. You can bow down and apologize for America’s power all you want, but as long as America is #1, Underdogmatists will hate America for being #1. So, the only way to satisfy those who hate America for being powerful is to…stop being powerful. That price is too high to pay to satisfy those who hate the great for being great. In the last chapter of my book—the Antidote to Underdogma—I offer a better way than bowing down, apologizing and giving America’s power away.

5. What role do you see the Tea Party playing next year? Less than 2012?

Politicians who are spending America into insolvency—unless they are stopped—will give Underdogmatists exactly what they want: a world in which America is no longer #1. This is what’s at stake, and Tea Partiers get it. That’s why they are fighting the irresponsible spending of politicians, from both parties, every step of the way. The job is not yet done, and that’s why Tea Partiers are not letting up.

6. What has been the most gratifying feedback you've received about Underdogma?

This entire experience has been such a blessing. Three likely candidates for US President have endorsed Underdogma. Frank Gaffney, Andrew McCarthy, the Tea Party Patriots and others have written nice words about the book. I’ve been on air with dozens of my talk radio heroes, including John Batchelor, Hugh Hewitt, Jim Bohannon and Dennis Miller. But the most gratifying feedback I get is from the moms and grandmothers who are the backbone of the Tea Party movement. They love Underdogma, and I love meeting them at Tea Party events. If you want to fill your heart, and your resolve to keep America exceptional, spend some time with the patriotic women who fuel the Tea Party movement.

7. Plans for any other books?

Yes. Several. Including a sequel to Underdogma, and some unexpected ones. Plus a TV series coming out, and a few other things. Go to www.under-dogma.com, sign up for the free Underdogma newsletter, and you’ll be the first to know about everything!
8. Anything else you'd like to add?

Just a quick note about your blog, and blogs in general. I think many people take blogs for granted, and the new grassroots nature of new media that blogs have spawned. The tagline of Pundit Press is “Truth can stand by itself.” True. But blogs, new media and social media help share the truth with others. For that, I’m grateful.
