Tester in Trouble in 2012 Senate Race

In 2006, Montana saw a contentious race. On the one side was Jon Tester-- a farmer and a Democrat who argued that his rural background made him a good choice for Senate. On the other side was incumbent Senator Conrad Burns, who was hardly popular in the conservative-libertarian stronghold. Add in a wave election and corruption allegations against Burns and Tester winds up winning by under one percent.

Despite this, Tester is not terribly popular right now. Tester was elected to be a fiscally responsible representatives. Like most Democrats who make that promise, he has not been prudent with the public's money. Instead, he has voted to rack up trillions in debt.

Tester
Now it appears to be coming back to him.

Despite the next election being over a year away, new polling has come out that should give Tester some pause. Coming off of last year's wave, the Democratic Party has seen its luck go south in the state.

Against current Congressman Denny Rehberg, Tester is in trouble.

Tester (D): 46%
Rehberg (R): 45%
Other/und: 9%

Tester comes below the important 50% threshold for incumbents. Rehberg is the state's only representative and is relatively popular. Add to that the fact that Montanans don't like government interference or profligate spending, and we're likely to have an interesting 2012.

  1. Tester the budget molestor. Has voted straight down the line with Obama. Tried to get a big federal land grab bill through.

He replaced Conrad Burns, who had degenerated into a beltway RINO.

Rehberg's voting record is hardly one of fiscal conservatism...he voted for Bush's worst initiatives, including No Child Left Behind and the prescription drug benefit. Lately, he seems to have lurched right and voted more as a conservative. He's no peach, but he is light years better than Tester.
